Jammu and Kashmir - IDPD annual meeting

Annual General body meeting of IDPD unit of Jammu and Kashmir was held on 21st Oct 2023, at IMA House Bemina, Srinagar. Following senior members attended the meeting besides many other junior and new  members.

Prof Ajaz Rather, General Secretary IDPD J&K section started the proceedings by welcoming Dr Arun Mitra and other Senior members  of IDPD. After introducing IDPD to new members, he gave an overview of work and contribution of IDPD in J&K State (be it  earth quake in 2005 or 2014 floods) and at National and international level for maintaining peace and restoration of human rights of war victims.

Dr Lateef Chisti in his Presidential address started with expressing condolence to Dr S.S.Soodan on the demise of his wife Dr Parveen Kaur, Ex-Principal GMC Srinagar by observing with  3 mints  silence and briefed the audience about her contribution .He also directed General Secretary to send condolences to Dr S S Soodan on behalf of State IDPD. He gave a detailed overview of IDPD activities. As Dr Lateef has been working as President of JK -IDPD since 2012, when this new form was established, after being selected as Vice-President at National Level, he nominated Dr Ajaz A Rather as JK-State President which was seconded by Dr G M Malik and endorsed by Dr Arun Mitra.

 

Dr G.M .Malik, founder president  of JK-IDPD congratulated Dr Mitra for his elevation to the post of President IDPD. He described the contribution of Dr Mitra in particular and National IDPD in general, in playing vital role in earth quake (in Karnah, Uri, Baramulla and Kupwara)by distributing blankets, clothes and other essential commodities  and 2014 floods in Kashmir where goods worth for lakhs of rupees were distributed to victims in Srinagar.

Dr Malik stressed to new President to make this wing strong,as in past students from J & K like Dr Yasmeen, Dr Abid Rashid Shah, Dr Sehrish worked as secretaries at national level of IDPD students wing. More national and international programmes shall be expected in 2024at Srinagar and Jammu.

He also described the contribution of Dr Soodan –Present Patron IDPD, who also accompanied Dr Mitra to Kashmir in floods. He also congratulated Dr Lateef A Chisti for being selected as National vice -President. Dr Malik conveyed that Dr Lateef –(President) and Dr Ajaz –(General Secretary ) should strengthen the J & K-IDPD unit.

Dr Arun Mitra expressed his sadness and concerns over the present conditions prevailing in Palestine and Israel where innocent children are being targeted in Palestine. He emphasised the need to make a good history for newer generation and stop the innocent target killings. He described it a tragedy and without supporting anyone, he condemned the innocent killings in Palestine. He emphasised that Nuclear weapon needs to be abolished as most of national budget is spent on defence.

Emphasizing the need of spending on health, Dr Mitra said India is spending only 1 % of total GDP on health where it has to be  6%,  also stated that we stand at No. 111 out of 125 countries in hunger index. He concluded by saying that keeping aside all the religious and communal lines, we should all work for wellbeing of people all over the country. He also wished that there should be a good number of participants in south Asian Meet of IDPD likely to be held in March 2024 in Kathmandu.

Students from SKIMS Mcedical College & GMC Srinagar who wanted to join IDPD attended the meeting and were assured by National President to be invited to participate in National/International conferences of IDPD, IPPNW.

Secretary, Dr Ajaz thanked J & K IMA President, secretary finance and general manager for providing meeting hall and other facilities free to organizers .Dr Zorawer Singh Finance secretary paid vote of thanks at the end  and invited all participants for high tea.
